Here are four more average circulated wheat back pennies from my large collection. They are all 1942 no mint mark coins. There's still some gleam coming off the camera that seems to affect the coins on the right more than the left, but I feel you can still get a good look and feel for the condition of these coins. It may look like the top left-hand Corner wheat penny is not getting any light. But if you look closely at both images of the obverse and the reverse you will see it's just a really dark penny. Of course the one on the bottom left is even darker.
A lot of obsessive collectors are really particular when it comes to the patina of their pennies. Oftentimes they try to get at least one example of each color palette. These colors can range anywhere from light brown to dark black. Although in some extremely rare cases that are silver colored coins, some of these are from rare mint accidents, and I'm not talking about steel pennies. There are also some points that have the coating rubbed off leaving a strange bronze or copper color. Personally I think most of these are coins that have been tampered with and not actual minting errors but some collectors enjoy finding them.
